Tips for Reducing Hand & Wrist Pain

voytik • September 26, 2018

We use our hands and wrists for nearly every activity throughout every day. For that reason, hand and wrist issues are not only common but can really put a damper on your day-to-day activities. Carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger fingers are two common injuries often exacerbated by repetitive hand and wrist movements. Here are some tips to help prevent these issues and reduce cramping or soreness in your hands and wrists.

  • Stretch Your Hands and Wrists – Many of our usual daily activities like texting or typing put our hands and wrists in awkward positions that promote pain. Stretching your hands to keep your fingers and wrists limber can go a long way towards relieving any pain.

  • Keep Cramps Away – Hand cramps are often caused by dehydration or a loss of electrolytes. Be sure to drink about eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day for proper hydration, and eat foods that are high in Vitamin D and potassium to help prevent hand cramps.

  • Take a Break – Just like you should get up and walk around the office if you work at a desk all day, your hands and wrists need their time to rest as well. Carpal tunnel and trigger finger are most often caused by repetitive stress, so taking breaks is crucial to preventing these issues.

  • Perfect your Posture – Many people tend to think that poor posture only affects the neck and back, but keeping your posture in check can greatly benefit your hands and wrists. This holds especially true for people who spend much of their day at a desk or computer. Keep your forearms lowered and use an ergonomic office chair if possible to keep the pain away.

  • Invest in Quality Pens – This is especially true if you write for long periods of time on a regular basis. If you suffer from hand pain while writing, try out a few different pen styles to see what fits you most comfortably. Pens with rubber grips are popular for people looking for the most comfortable writing experience.
